The Key Components To A Successful Long Jump

In track and field, the long jump is one of the oldest events. Its history dates back to the original Olympics which took place in Ancient Greece. It is one of the most popular events, and also one of the most exciting. It is an event that any athlete can participate in. To do it well, and to consistently jump far takes great skill. The good thing is... that skill can be learned! It can be learned through proper technique, and training. The dominant athletes in this event are the ones who have a good balance of... These three elements are critical to performing well. Especially critical, is the one of ... speed!
The basic principles of long jump physics dictate that the faster the athlete, the farther they can jump. What is interesting though, is that at the elite level you could have an athlete who is a little bit slower than the rest, but can jump just as far if not farther than the others. The reason for that is that the slower athlete will have a better approach, take off, and overall technique. So, for those out there who aren't burning up the runway... it's ok! You can still be successful. That is why it is so important to focus on balancing speed, strength, and technique. If these are developed correctly then there is going to be a big advantage when practicing...
The Four Phases What are the four phases? Well... Just as the high jump and triple jump have phases that are critical to success, so too does the long jump. It has four very important components... - The Approach
- The Take Off (last two strides)
- The Flight Through The Air
- The Landing
These four areas need constant attention and work. To achieve the maximum distances desired, mastering these areas will be crucial. It all begins with consistency! Without consistency, there are going to be a lot of great jumps...that are fouls. The farthest distances in the world, come from the athletes who are not only fast, but have learned to be consistent through these four areas. Consistency in these areas will lead to great distances. When these distances are finally reached, then records will be set. Remember... to be successful takes practice! Developing a sound technique, and being consistent are the keys to reaching maximum distance. Look at the Women's and Men's 2008 Olympic results to see what mastering these four areas can do. If you or your athletes are looking to achieve those types of distances in the long jump, it is best to begin with an understanding of what the rules are of the event. Once you understand them, come back here to find out what the most important part of the event is. Sign Up for the Farther And Higher E-Zine here.
