High Jump And What You Need To Know!
Do you know what the most important part of the high jump is?
Are you sure? Well...if not, that is ok! You can find out
here!
Once you know what is important, you will be on your way to developing a good foundation. Success in this event, relies heavily on a solid foundation! Just as in the long jump, triple jump, and pole vault, learning how to jump and being successful at it go hand in hand. If you learn how to do it properly there will be no limit to what you can achieve. If you have natural athletic ability then you can be good! If you don't have as much ability as you like...well...the great thing is, you can still be good! Probably better than you think! It is one of the few events where an athlete with a great approach, explosive takeoff, and good technique, can perform very well. The key is... consistency! Practicing correct technique
in all phases of the event, and focusing on proper training, will develop the needed skills to be a good track and field high jumper. Just so you know...inconsistency is the death of all jumpers! So it is vital that you learn how to do everything correctly, and then... practice...practice...practice! Experienced jumpers, such as Blanka Vlasic know the importance of consistent training. They also know that there are always areas to improve upon, especially since it is not as simple as... running and jumping. Look at the Men's and Women's 2008 Olympic results to see what proper technique and consistency has allowed them to do.
The Big 3
There are actually three main phases to the event that need specific focus if you want to be successful. 1.
The Approach
2. The Takeoff
3. The Flight (bar clearance)
If your focus is week in these three key areas, you will struggle. They are an important part of the technique. So, it is essential that time is spent on each one of these phases! It won't matter if you are a beginner jumper, an experienced one, or a coach. Without proper attention to these phases, you will not reach the next level! If you want to be successful and reach that next level, there has to be a proper foundation. The best way to build that foundation, is to begin with the correct... high jump drills.
